I started my plant journey when I was 5 years old. I know it sounds crazy. How can a 5 year old decide what to eat and what not to eat?
When I was 5 I had 5 bunnies – 4 white ones and 1 black one. They were so small, so cute and fluffy. I loved playing with them and treated them as friends since I didn’t have any (we just moved to a new city). One hot summer morning as soon as I woke up I went to check up on my bunnies like I always did, pulled my curtains to a side and froze in terror. Their breathless bodies were hanging on a string inside their cage. That was the moment that changed everything in my life. That’s how I instantly became a vegetarian.
This journey was quite tricky for my parents, especially for my busy mom. She was working long hours as a teacher and then doing all the house work, and at that time we didn’t have the internet and there wasn’t a lot of information on Vegetarianism in books. I learnt to cook my own meals quite quickly but now, looking back, I see that I was lacking a lot of nutrients because vegetarian doesn’t always mean healthy.
I was lean though most of my life and the only time when I was chubby was in my early 20s for a year or so when I decided that I wanted to be “normal” and eat meat like everyone else. I felt horrible knowing I’m adding to the suffering of animals and also felt really heavy after every meal so I decided that I’m fine with being a weirdo and I quickly went back to vegetarian to see all those extra pounds dropping quickly.
As I was learning more about healthy eating habits and the global situation I switched to vegan and then whole food plant based lifestyle. I really wanted to help other busy moms see and feel all the benefits of this lifestyle and also show them how they could help their families be healthier and maintain normal weight throughout their life without spending hours in the kitchen.
The problem was that a lot of people were telling me, “But I’m on a … diet and losing weight”, or “I’m doing … and losing weight”, or a bunch of other diets.
That’s when I did more research on most common diets and it came to me! Yes, they were losing extra weight, but as soon as they were off those diets they would gain it right back, and sometimes even more! Those diets weren’t sustainable. Most of the time they are very unhealthy as they lead to various nutrient deficiencies and health problems, but they are also impossible to do long term.
Apart from that I see how we are destroying our planet with our food choices. I have a 5 year old beautiful princess and I feel that if we don’t change our eating habits quick enough our kids and grandkids won’t have this beautiful planet as we know it.
